This is useful because these folders can be located on your Google Drive. You can symlink any folder containing PDFs, PNGs, JPEGs, Gifs, to your obsidian vault. If you are uncomfortable with this, then just use the first option where you create link using the pathname to your google drive folder. This separates my Notability notes on google drive and my markdown notes on git. gitignore file so that it doesn't get backed up to my github. I also add the Notability directory to my. I use git to backup my notes, and I push them to my remote repository on Github. I do not use obsidian sync or a cloud service for my vault, so I do not know if files backed up to two cloud services (drive and obsidiansync) will overwrite your handwritten notes. NOTE Just be careful if you are using obsidian sync or if you are backing up your vault to a cloud service. You can type ![[ to easily link your PDFs: Now you should be able to see your Notability folder in Obsidian: , which is short for the current working directory (your obsidian vault). I do this with the location of my Notability folder in the following figure: , where \path/to/googledrive/notability/`` will be your path to your notability folder. You do this with the following command: ln -s path/to/googledrive/notability/. ![]() Now, use the symlink command to create a link to your notability folder to your obsidian folder. You can check youre in the correct by printing the current working directory pwd: You can do this with the change directory command cd followed by your obsidian vault path. I use MacOS, so these instructions are for Mac.įirst, open your terminal and go to your obsidian vault. I prefer to use symlinks to link your drive folder into your obsidian vault. This all depends on your internet connection speed and how fast your notability syncs and your Google drive updates. You may also have to close and repoen the markdown note to see the changes. You have to leave your Notability note in order for it to sync to Goole Drive. To edit your drawing, simply go to your note in Notability and make edits. In the previous figure I added a period after the link so that it would transclude. NOTE: For some reason the file is not transcluded unless I add a character after the link. You can read more about them on the plugins repository. There are more options you can use with 'Ozan's Image in Editor Plugin,' such as changing the size of the transclusion, or transcluding to specific page. ![]() Now, you can transclude your notability note onto your markdown note with !(file:////my/path/to/googledrive/notability/mydrawing.pdf) NOTE: If the path bar is not visible in your Finder, then you need click View > Show Path Bar on Finder. You can easily get your notes path by (1) selecting your file in the Finder, (2) right-clicking your file in the path bar, and (3) clicking copy: To link your PDFs to a markdown file you need to find your Notes path. Your Notability folder should now be on your desktop:Īt this point your Notability notes are backed up as PDFs to a local folder on your machine. This folder will be synced to the Drive, so any changes you make on Notability will update in this local folder. Then, you want to download the desktop app for Google Drive and store your Notability folder locally. Okay, so the first thing you want to do is go to your Notability settings and opt to backup your notes as PDFs: The plugin 'Ozan's Image in Editor Plugin' allows you to transclude a preview of your PDF note into your markdown notes on Obsidian. This example will use Notability, Google drive, and the obsidian plugin 'Ozan's Image in Editor Plugin'. It works for Notability and Goodnotes, and pretty much any other drawing app that lets you back up your hand written notes as PDFs to some cloud system. I am writing this post to share the solution I used during undergrad. However, the only problem was linking my hand written notes. During undergrad, I used Notability for my handwritten notes, and I used obsidian as a landing page to organize my syllabus, assignments, textbooks (as PDFs), and all other class materials. I noticed there are many students looking for a way to incorporate their handwritten notes into Obsidian. ![]()
